Beirut is thirty-five minutes away and eleven degrees warmer. Twenty-four thousand square metres of pine, and a balcony to watch the light go off the Metn. Eight kilometres from the slopes, and a salon of timber beams and old rugs where the lamps come on early. Come back cold. Stay for the fire.
The name
Not the other way around. In 1930 Youssef Ghostine applied to build a hotel among the pines of the Metn. The French mandate officer who signed the permit looked at the forest, thought of Paris, and said so out loud.
The name stuck to the hotel, then to the road, then to the village itself – Ghabat Boulonia. Three generations of the same family have run it since. It has never changed hands, and through occupation and seventeen years of war, it never closed.
Surprised by the pines, the officer compared the place to the Bois de Boulogne. The village has answered to that name ever since. On the founding of the hotel, 1930

Ninety-six years
Most of Lebanon's grand mountain hotels of this era are gone, or shells. This one is still taking bookings.
Stay
Every room has been rebuilt a floor at a time – no two are decorated quite alike. Three private bungalows sit apart in the trees for anyone who wants their own front door.

60 rooms
Renovated a floor at a time. Wood floors, marble bathrooms, and a balcony that faces the trees rather than the road.

12 suites
A separate sitting room, and enough space that nobody has to negotiate over the sofa. Built for families who arrive together and stay a while.

For families
A double and a bunk in one room, so nobody is negotiating over who sleeps where. Papered wall to wall, and the playground is two floors down.

Long stays
Large and small, in the annexe next door. Cook for yourself, work from the balcony, book by the week or the season.
The table
Mezze, hot dishes, salads, and a dessert table that people have been driving up the mountain for since before most of them were born. Laid outside under the pines in summer, and beside the fireplace when it turns.
The bar and the lobby salons stay open late, and the fireplace does most of the talking.

Gather
Weddings & parties
Twenty-four thousand square metres of private grounds, and a family that has been running wedding dinners here for three generations.

Seminars, offsites and art workshops, an hour from the city and entirely out of earshot of it. Full presentation kit, and rooms upstairs for everyone.
Indoors, all weather
A covered playground with slides big enough to keep children busy for an entire afternoon, and a dedicated room for birthdays. It is the reason a lot of families come back.
